Abortion Pills

Telehealth and In-Clinic Appointments Available

At Meadow, we prioritize your health and comfort by offering medication abortion services both through telehealth and in-person appointments. Whether you prefer the convenience of a virtual consultation or the support of a visit to our clinic, we are here to help you navigate your options.

A medication abortion, also known as abortion pills, is a safe and effective way to end a pregnancy up to 11 weeks of gestation. This method typically involves taking a sequence of two medications to end your pregnancy: mifepristone and misoprostol. The first medication is taken at our clinic or via telehealth, and the second is taken in a self-managed setting. Our team will provide clear instructions and support throughout the process.

Telehealth Medication Abortion

Telehealth abortion appointments are available for patients who are in or can travel to Virginia or DC. We will assess your pregnancy gestation and general health indications through our secure telehealth portal. We can prescribe pills through a pharmacy convenient to you or have pills mailed to addresses in states where abortion is legal.

In-Person Medication Abortion

Meadow offers medication abortion services through in-person visits with our trained providers. In that visit, you will receive a sonogram, and we will then provide pills to you in the clinic. You will take the first pill in our office, and will take the remaining pills in a self managed setting. Abortion pills are available for pregnancies up to 11 weeks of gestation.

FAQs

Yes, medication abortion is very safe. Medication abortion has been used safely for more than 25 years. Terminating a pregnancy with medication abortion pills (mifepristone and misoprostol) is around 14 times safer than carrying a pregnancy to term. Medication abortion is extremely safe with 97-98% effectiveness in the first eight weeks and 93-95% in the first ten weeks. In the rare cases where there is a complication, our providers can provide guidance and support.

A medication abortion (also known as the “abortion pill”) is a safe and effective method for an abortion to 11 weeks. The first medication, mifepгistоnе, blocks the hormone progesterone which sustains a pregnancy. Without this hormone, the endometrial lining and pregnancy stops developing and shrinks from the uterine wall. The second step of a medication abortion uses misоpгostоl, which helps the cervix soften and the uterus expel the ended pregnancy.

You will receive a link to our patient portal once your appointment is scheduled.  After you register you will find several forms in your portal which we would like you to review and complete before your appointment. Completing these forms ahead of time will help to move things along more quickly at your appointment.

If your appointment is at our office, we may provide an ultrasound of your uterus to determine the estimated gestation of the pregnancy.  You may want to wear comfortable, loose fitting clothing for an abdominal (“over the belly”) ultrasound. In addition, we may ask you to review consent forms with your provider and sign them in person. We also ask that you bring a photo ID to your appointment.

If your appointment is a video visit through telehealth, we ask that you have your forms completed ahead of time so our clinicians can review your health history and consent forms before your appointment. Our video visits use Zoom; please be sure that Zoom is installed on your computer or your phone before your appointment time. If you have any issues accessing your video visit, please call our office at (703) 783-3300.

If we will be sending abortion pills to your home or to a local pharmacy, please be sure to submit payment through our patient portal at the end of your virtual visit in order to prevent delays in having your prescription processed.
